The Vanuatu Cricket Association are pleased to announce that the women’s cricket season is set to hit off Saturday 24th of June, with the Women’s T20 Club Championship competition. The competition comes after an exciting finish to the Men’s T20 Club Championship which saw the Tusker Panthers claim the Championship and grand prize of 100,000 Vatu.
Matches are set to be played at the Vanuatu Cricket Grounds and Independence Park from 1 PM every Saturday, and will see six teams, namely, North Efate Bushpigs, Tafea Cricket Club, Splashe Mele Bulls, Ifira Blackbird, Mighty Panthers and Southern Wind battle it out for a grand prize of 100,000 Vatu.
The induction of Southern Wind cricket club is a new special edition to club cricket, as it is the first mamas’ team from the Women’s Island Cricket program to join hardball cricket. Similarly, we have merged Paama Sharks, Mighty Saints and Tusker Panthers to play as “Mighty Panthers” this season.
Operations Manager, Jamal Vira commented:
“The upcoming club competition is a great steppingstone for these ladies leading into the Women’s World Cup Qualifier which will be held later this year in September and gives our Coach and High-Performance Manager an opportunity to scout potential candidates for the high-performance program leading into the qualifier in September.
“Outside of that, it is also an excellent development opportunity for these young ladies, especially those who are new or still learning to gain more experience playing the game and also from their more seasoned teammates/opposition, such as Women’s Team Captain, Selina Solman and all-rounder Rachel Andrew”.
All cricket matches are free to watch, and the public is welcome to any of its venues to do so. Match schedules and updates can also be found on the Vanuatu Cricket social media pages.
