Thirty-two Year 9 and 10 students at Port Vila International School (PVIS) are taking part in a new High-Performance Cricket and Athlete Development Program delivered in partnership with Vanuatu Cricket.

Introduced as an elective for Terms 3 and 4, the program combines practical cricket training with classroom-based learning, recognized cricket qualifications and broader athlete development.

Each week, students spend a double period at the Vanuatu Cricket Ground undertaking practical training, alongside one classroom period at PVIS focused on theory and development. As part of the elective, students are currently completing the ICC Foundation Coaching Certificate, while also learning about umpiring and scoring, strength and conditioning, fitness, sports psychology, nutrition and recovery, biomechanics, goal setting and leadership.

The program is designed to help students develop as athletes, leaders and learners, while giving them a deeper understanding of the opportunities available through cricket and sport. The elective is open to students regardless of their previous cricket experience, allowing both established players and students new to the sport to take part.

PVIS has played a key role in establishing the program and integrating it into the school curriculum.

PVIS Principal Rachel Woodley-Higgins said the elective was designed to provide students with a practical learning experience while exposing them to new skills and future opportunities.

“Being active, being part of a team and working towards shared goals develops not only physical skills, but also confidence, discipline, communication, leadership and resilience. We are very grateful to Vanuatu Cricket for partnering with us to create this opportunity. Their expertise and positive role modelling are already making a positive difference for our students.”

Chris Laffan, Vanuatu Cricket’s High-Performance Manager, said the program is an exciting opportunity to introduce students to a different side of cricket.

“Cricket can provide young people with so much more than just the opportunity to play the game. Through this program, students are developing practical skills, learning about high-performance environments and gaining qualifications that can open doors into coaching, officiating and other areas of sport.”

“At Vanuatu Cricket, we value helping young people develop confidence, leadership, discipline as well as a better understanding of what it takes to develop as an athlete and individual. This program is a great first step to achieving this and we are privileged and excited that PVIS has chosen Vanuatu Cricket to partner with for this program.”

With 32 students in its first intake and growing interest among young people, PVIS and Vanuatu Cricket hope the program can show how sport and education can work side by side to develop well-rounded young people with skills, confidence and opportunities that extend far beyond the classroom or cricket field.

The High-Performance Cricket and Athlete Development Program will continue throughout Terms 3 and 4 of the 2026 academic year.
