On March 31st, 13 women from Beverly Hills, Eratap, Imaki and Ifira participated in a refresher course for women’s island cricket umpiring and scoring at the Vanuatu Cricket board room at Korman.
The refresher course is an annual course with the aim to provide new women’s island cricket program (WICP) participants with the knowledge and skills to umpire and score for WIC competitions and provide continuing umpires and scorers to refresh their knowledge of the program.
During this refresher course, the women went through an introduction to Island Cricket, learned about the rules of Island Cricket and the basics of scoring and umpiring an Island Cricket match.
Annette Sablan, a participant from Ifira who has been absent from WICP for two years, is one of the participants this year because she is interested to rejoin the program as an umpire and/or a scorer.
“I am very happy to be part of the scoring and umpiring course this year because after two years away from Island Cricket, I miss it and I feel that I can make a difference and contribute as an umpire or a scorer that’s why I decided to join again this year,” she said.
Lucien Taiwia, the VCA’s WICP officer expressed that she is happy with the turn out of participants and she hopes that the new umpires and scorers will assist the women’s island cricket program in promoting and developing WICP in their communities.
The Women’s Island Cricket Program is funded by the Australian Government through the Team Up Program and Vanuatu Cricket Association would like to acknowledge their support of the WICP and all of VCA’s Social Impact and Inclusions program.
