Vanuatu Cricket Stars Head to Melbourne for Victorian Cricket Season

Eight of Vanuatu's national cricket players from the Holiday Inn Resort Vanuatu Men’s and Women’s teams have embarked on an exciting journey to Melbourne, Australia, to compete in the upcoming Victorian cricket season. Seven men will showcase their talents in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association, while one woman will play in the Victorian Premier Women’s Cricket.

Among the men, Joshua Rasu will join Craigieburn, Nalin Nipiko and Williamsing Nalisa head to Doutta Stars, Darren and Womajo Wotu represent Footscray Angliss, Steve Sandy will play for Gellibrand, and Simpson Obed joins West Newport. Additionally, Clement Tommy will participate in the Victorian Sub District Cricket Association with Ormond.

On the women’s side, Rachel Andrew will take to the field for Essendon Maribyrnong Park Ladies in the Victorian Premier Women’s Cricket competition.

This marks a significant step for Vanuatu Cricket as these players gain valuable international experience, further strengthening their skills and bringing pride to their nation. The opportunity was facilitated by Vanuatu high performance manager and national coach Chris Laffan, who used his local contacts and support from the Victorian Turf Cricket Association (VTCA) to help secure club placements.

Laffan emphasized the importance of these experiences, particularly as most players haven’t had exposure to red-ball cricket before. The placement of the players across different grades not only broadens their skill set but also brings Pacific cricket talent into the Australian competition. With continued support from key partners, Laffan hopes to make this an annual opportunity for Vanuatu cricketers, providing them with a platform to grow and develop further.

“We are thankful for the VTCA and Zoran Havranek for their commitment to the improvement of cricket in the Pacific and support of our players,” Laffan said, noting that the initiative aims to provide valuable experiences while helping grow the sport back home.

This journey is a testament to the growing strength of Vanuatu cricket, as they leverage international partnerships to provide players with opportunities that ensure the development of cricket as a career path.
