Road to 2024 World Cup continues with Vanuatu T20 Men’s Championship

With the Holiday Inn Resort National Men’s Cricket Team due to compete in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Regional Final in Papua New Guinea this July against Japan, Philippines and the hosts, local men’s cricket in Vanuatu now moves to the shorter Twenty20 format in preparation for this historic event.

Vanuatu is only one step away from a historic country-first berth at the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, scheduled to be co-hosted by the West Indies & USA. Finishing top of the table after the double round robin event in Port Moresby will result in the side becoming our country’s first to qualify for a senior world cup in any sport.

The Men’s T20 Championship is the second domestic competition of the 2023 season and will commence this Saturday, the 15th of May with seven clubs competing for the title and a grand prize of 100,000 Vatu.

The competing teams include the Tusker Panthers, Splashe Mele Bulls, North Efate Bushpigs, Tafea Cricket Club, Paama Sharks, Mighty Saints and after missing last year’s cricket season, the Ifira Blackbirds have re-joined the men’s domestic league for the remainder of the year.

The tournament kicks off with three matches from 1:00 PM at both Vanuatu Cricket Grounds, Korman (VCG) and Independence Park. Mighty Saints will be hitting off against the Ifira Blackbirds, while Tafea Cricket Club faces the Tusker Panthers, and the Splashe Mele Bulls will be up against the North Efate Bushpigs. Paama Sharks have the bye this weekend. The public is welcome to join in the fun and watch some exciting cricket matches live at the ground.
