Skipper’s knock not enough as Vanuatu fall short against Australia Indigenous Side

Captain Rachel Andrew produced a fighting half-century, including seven boundaries, to steer Vanuatu to what they hoped would be a competitive total, but it wasn’t enough to prevent a six-wicket loss to the Australia Indigenous Women XI in Port Moresby on Tuesday.

After early wickets left Vanuatu reeling at 5 for 27, Andrew steadied the innings with an unbeaten 56 from 54 deliveries, anchoring her side to 94 for 8 from their 20 overs. Right-arm off-spinner Ella Hayward wreaked havoc through the middle order with a brilliant hat-trick, finishing with figures of 3 for 17 from her three overs.

In reply, the Australians chased down the target with eight balls to spare. Despite skipper Andrew bowling Mikayla Hinkley in the second over for 2, there was no further joy for Vanuatu for another ten overs. Tahlia Meier anchored the innings with a patient 31* off 52 balls, combining with Veronica Keen (24) to build a steady platform. Vicky Mansale eventually broke the partnership and picked up a second wicket shortly after, but by then the Australians were well on track.
