Vanuatu Women’s Cricket Team Stars in New ABC Australia Documentary “The Season”

Vanuatu Cricket is excited to announce the release of The Season, a three-part documentary series by ABC Australia, which follows members of the Holiday Inn Resort Vanuatu women’s national cricket team as they navigate the demanding world of seasonal work in Australia while chasing their cricketing dreams. This powerful documentary captures their resilience, dedication, and passion for the sport, providing an intimate look into the lives of these inspiring athletes.

The first episode is already available on ABC iview and ABC Pacific Facebook and episodes two and three air on ABC Australia on Sunday 3 November and Sunday 10 November at 8pm VUT, then will also be available on iview and ABC Pacific Facebook.

The Season follows the journey of workers from Vanuatu, Tonga, and the Solomon Islands as they participate in Australia’s seasonal fruit and vegetable picking industry. Featured prominently in the series are several players from Vanuatu’s women’s cricket team, who take on this seasonal work to support their families, while also staying committed to their training and ambitions of playing cricket at the highest level.

Filmed over ten months in Queensland, New South Wales, and Victoria in Australia, as well as in Vanuatu and the United Arab Emirates, the documentary provides a unique window into the balance the players must strike between their professional and personal responsibilities. From the farms of Australia to the cricket fields of Vanuatu and international stadiums, The Season highlights their journey of perseverance as they work toward their dream of competing on the global cricket stage.

“We are very much enjoying watching our inspiring national women’s cricketers again being the stars of the show, this time shining a spotlight on the challenges so many of them overcome to merely be able to play cricket, let alone deliver amazing results like we saw in Abu Dhabi – and, even better to see captain Selina Solman front and centre on the series’ promotional artwork,” said Vanuatu Cricket CEO Tim Cutler.

IComply CEO and partner of Vanuatu Cricket through the sporting dreams and season work partnership Rodney Prestia praised the collaboration that went into The Season: “This production is the result of unparalleled access to the private farms of Australia and our huge thanks goes especially to our agriculture partners Red Jewell Nursery and Bratasha Farm who opened up their facilities to the crew to help tell this miraculous story.”

Vanuatu Cricket encourages everyone to tune in and be inspired by the incredible journey of these athletes.

The Vanuatu Cricket Association would also like to thank the ICC for permitting the use of game footage from the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifier played in Abu Dhabi during April and May 2024.
